Winifred Avalon Jones was her given name, but everyone knew her as Winnie. She was born at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital on April 16, 1921. Her parents, Maurice and Mina (Emerson) Jones, picked her out special and took her home to Conesville, Iowa where she grew up. She married David J. "Bob" Hotle in Kahoka, Missouri on December 14, 1941, and they were married until his death in 1946. She married Clifford D. Porter in Ottumwa on March 11, 1950. They spent 51 loving years together, living in West Chester most of their married life except for a few years they spent in Missouri.

Winnie worked a variety of jobs during her life, from office manager at Porter Elevator, to owner of Cliff and Winnie's Café, to waitress at the Willows, to store clerk at Kum-n-Go in Washington. Her favorite job was as wife, mom, grandma, and great-grandma to her family, of whom she was most proud.

She was known for her helpful, generous nature, her cooking, and a tendency to be a bit ornery. She loved to dance with her favorite partner, Cliff, dancing to big band songs and square dance calls. Winnie always had a smile and an encouraging word for everyone she met. Everybody seemed to know Winnie; she will be missed by many.

Winnie is survived by her children Randy (Karen) Porter of Omaha, Nebraska; Jodie Porter of Iowa City, Iowa; Robert Porter of Wellman, Iowa; and Jane (Scott) Hobbs of West Chester, Iowa; daughter-in-law Amber Boles of Rochester, Minnesota; grandchildren Joey, Ashley, Austin, Mary, Avalon, and Anna Porter; great-grandchildren Madelyn and Morgan Scott; sisters-in-law Priscilla Wright and Janet Renoux; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; infant daughter Pamela Porter; and grandson Dallas Scott.
