Winifred J. Polis, age 96, of Washington, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14, 2014, at the All American Care Center in Washington.
The family will be present at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2014, to receive friends and celebrate Winifred's life. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Washington Public Library. Winifred was born August 13, 1918, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas J. and Naomi F. (Miller) Gerdes. She attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1936. On February 14, 1948, Winifred was united in marriage to Floyd "Cal" Polis.
Winifred was a lifelong resident of Washington, Iowa. She worked for the Iowa State Department of Human Resources for 38 years until her retirement in 1982. After retirement, she enjoyed her home and yard and keeping up on the many adventures of her family. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the VFW Auxilliary.
She is survived by one sister, Esther Livingston of Lititz, PA; three nieces, Gwen Fuller and husband Robert of Anamosa, IA; Pat Weaver of Janesville, WI; Beth Bray and husband Harold of Wolverine, MI; three nephews, Mike Heath of Anamosa, IA; Tom Livingston and wife Denise of Newmanstown, PA; David Livingston and wife Maria of Apex, N.C.; numerous great nieces and great nephews and special friend, Janet Hagie of Washington, Iowa.
Winifred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Floyd "Cal" Polis in 1972; twin brother Clair; and one sister, Joan Heath.
