Obituary

William John Neal, age 76, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Riverside, Iowa, died Monday, October 12, 2015, at the Desert Springs Communities in Mesa, Arizona, following a lengthy illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2015, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa, with Fr. David Brownfield officiating. Visitation will begin 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Friday evening. Prayer services will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Riverside, Iowa. Bill was born May 8, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John William and Alice Christina (Callan) Neal. He attended elementary school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Iowa City, Iowa. Bill was united in marriage to Janet Lee Eagle on February 8, 1964, in Riverside, Iowa.

Bill lived most of his life in Riverside, Iowa. He worked as a Maintenance Foreman for the University of Iowa Men's Athletic Department. He enjoyed wintering in Arizona and he and his wife moved to Mesa in 2014. Bill served honorably in the United States Army from 1957 until 1964. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed tinkering.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janet Neal of Mesa, Arizona; daughter, Angie Husain and husband Abdullah of Kuwait; daughter Teri Miller and Rick Jirsa of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter, Vicki Hauser and husband Martin of Mesa, Arizona; son, John William Neal and wife Megan of Riverside, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, Danah AlWathiqi and husband Husain Bin Haider, Jarah AlWathiqi and wife Fatma, Adel AlWathiqi, Barak AlWathiqi, Faye AlWathiqi, Natalie Miller, Molly Sobczak and husband Eddie, Jacqueline Shepherd, Chris Hauser, Kris Shepherd, Emily Minch and husband John, David Hauser, Alex Shepherd, Danielle Neal, William Neal, Cheyenne Neal, Trayton Paisley, Brodey Neal; three great grandchildren, Riley Mae Shepherd, Yousef Bin Haider, and Emmarae Minch. Bill is also survived by four sisters, Roseanne Sluka and husband Tiny of San Diego, California, Sharon Doran of Coralville, Iowa, Suzanne Whatley and husband Jim of Solon, Iowa, and Kelly Smith and husband Mark of Iowa City, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Michael Neal; sister, Shirley Margaret Neal, and brother-in-law, Barney Doran.
