William Paul "Hap" Monroe, age 94, of Washington, Iowa died Friday March 19, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday, March 23rd at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home with Revs. Joel and Gail Aurand officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Monday where the family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm Monday. Interment with Military Honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth. A memorial has been established for Hospice of Keokuk County. Hap was born on September 10, 1915 in Deep River, Iowa the son of Fred W. and Ethel Emma (Morrison) Monroe. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1932. Hap was united in marriage to Margaret Martha Green on December 10, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri. Hap served in the United States Air Force in World War II where he was a 3 year control tower operator at an England bomber base. Hap was a salesman with Smart Implement Company from 1938 until 1961 and was the manager at Smart Distribution Company in Vinton from 1956 until 1961. He was a manager at Cromer Distributing Company in Vinton from 1961 until 1972, and later was the owner and manager of H&M Farm and Home Supply Company in Sigourney from 1972 until 1981. Hap and Margaret lived in Sigourney and Vinton, Iowa and moved to Washington in the early 1990's. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington, lifetime member of the VFW, and was a former member of the Sigourney Lions Club.
Hap is survived by his wife, Margaret Monroe of Washington, Iowa; four sons, Bill Monroe and wife Chris of Johnston, Iowa; Tom Monroe and wife Loree of Sigourney, Iowa; Dennis Monroe and wife Cheryl of Sigourney, Iowa; and Mike Monroe of Atlanta, Georgia; eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Raymond Monroe; Clifford Monroe; Mabel Dallman; and Helen Monroe.
