William J. "Bill" Hennigan, age 86, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at the Washington County Hospital following a short illness.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa, with Fr. Charles Fladung officiating. Visitation will begin noon Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Friday evening. Prayer services will be held 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery. Bill was born November 11, 1927, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of William John and M. Dorothy (Petersen) Hennigan. He graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in Clinton, Iowa and and later graduated from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. Bill was united in marriage to Mary Ann Patchin on February 11, 1950 in Davenport, Iowa.
Bill was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy. He owned and operated International Harvester Implement Dealerships in Columbus Junction and Washington, Iowa. Bill was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington. Bill had served on the St. James School Board and on Finance Council. He enjoyed the time he spent with his family, reading, sports and being around people. He was integral in starting a youth baseball program at the Washington Community Y.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Hennigan of Washington, IA; son, Pat Hennigan and wife Chris of Urbandale, IA; son, Mike Hennigan and wife Leslie of Cookeville, TN; son, Denny Hennigan and wife Joan of Eldridge, IA; daughter, Sue Cohn and husband Dr. Ron of Moravian Falls, N.C.; daughter, Barbara Hennigan of Greensboro, N.C.; son, Tim Hennigan and wife Leslie of Greensboro, N.C.; son, Joe Hennigan and wife Lisa of Greensboro, N.C.; son, Matt Hennigan and wife Missy of Washington, Iowa; and daughter, Ann Godwin and husband Lindley of Greensboro, N.C. Bill is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one sister, Jody Zine of Elgin, Illinois.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
