William Earl "Polka Dot Bill" Smith, age 64, of Crawfordsville, Iowa died Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the United Church of Crawfordsville with Pastor Jason Collier officiating. A general memorial has been established. Online condolences may be sent for Bill's family through the web at

William Earl Smith was born August 17, 1948 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Frank and Virginia (Brown) Smith. He attended school in West Liberty, Iowa and graduated from West Liberty High School in 1966. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Bill was united in marriage to Linda Wilson on March 17, 1968 in West Chester, Iowa.
Bill had been a resident of Crawfordsville since 1980. He had previously resided in Fairfield, Iowa. As a young man, he was employed by Wilson Plumbing. He was self-employed for most of his life shoeing horses. He also traveled to horse sales around the Midwest selling tack.
Bill was a member of the American Legion and many, many saddle clubs. He was passionate about horses and enjoyed watching his grandkids grow.
Bill is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter Erin Smith of Washington, Iowa; daughter Jennifer Cook of Muscatine, Iowa; daughter Kelly Allworth and husband Ruger of Wapello, Iowa; son Matt Smith of Muscatine, Iowa; daughter Amanda Graber of Crawfordsville, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Jacee Stapp of Washington, Iowa; Zackery Stone Smith and Tanner Cook of Muscatine, Iowa; Alexis Lamoreux, Kase Allworth, and Karlee Allworth of Wapello, Iowa; Bailey Graber, Laney Graber, and Peyton Graber of Crawfordsville, Iowa; sister Nancy Christensen of Muscatine, Iowa; brother Robert A. Smith and wife Nancy of West Liberty, Iowa; brother Richard Smith and wife Vera of West Liberty, Iowa; sister Susan Hall and husband Marvin of West Liberty, Iowa; as well as many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Virginia; grandparents Earl and Della Smith; mother-in-law Mary Nichols and father-in-law Eugene Wilson.
