Wanda Wanita Johnson, age 96, of Riverside, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Joseph Brown officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday and from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Palliative Care Unit at the University of Iowa. Wanda was born October 7, 1919 in Pillager, Minnesota, the daughter of Elmer Henry and Matilda May (Kallaus) Durst. She attended Hazel Dell Country School and graduated from Washington High School. Wanda was united in marriage to Truman L. Johnson on January 6, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Wanda was a homemaker and later worked at the University of Iowa in housekeeping for 12 years. She attended the Lutheran Church in West Branch and later attended Marion Avenue Baptist Church in Washington. Wanda enjoyed gardening and canning and was an excellent baker and cook.
Survivors include her daughter, Sondra Kiene of Riverside, Iowa; daughter, Ellen Schellin of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter, Linda Plecker and husband George of Ainsworth, Iowa; son, Roger Johnson and wife Dalene "Dee" of West Liberty, Iowa; son, Mark Johnson and wife Melissa of West Liberty, Iowa; son, David Johnson and wife Diana of Brighton, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1993; 8 brothers and sisters.
