Wanda Pauline Jones, age 92, of Washington, IA, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at the United Presbyterian Home.
A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with Rev. Herb Yoder and Lester Schlatter officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Cambrian Cemetery in Columbus City, Iowa. Wanda was born August 4, 1923 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Frank and Mabel Belle (Woods) Custer. She graduated from Washington Centennial School in 1942. Wanda was united in marriage to Alvin Jones on June 26, 1943 in West Palm Beach, Florida, while Alvin was in the service. In 1945, they moved to the family farm west of Crawfordsville where they raised their three children. They moved to Washington in 1970.
Wanda worked in Washington at the Calendar Factory, Essex and Spurgeon's before retiring in 1987. She was a giving person and spent many hours volunteering her time as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, American Legion Auxiliary member, 4-H Leader and member of the Sunset Circle. Wanda was a very active member of the United Presbyterian Church and after the death of her husband, she was a church deacon, Stephen Minister and was very active on various circle committees. She was well known by many as "the doll lady," as she took old dolls, cleaned them and lovingly made new clothes for them. The dolls were then donated to foster children in Southeast Iowa for Christmas. Wanda continued this mission from 1987-2014, dressing many hundreds of dolls during this time.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Pazdernik and husband Ivan of Alexandria,MN; son-in-law, Lester Schlatter and wife Marla of Wayland, IA; 7 grandchildren: Shari Lee and husband Tony of Dilworth, MN; Angie Lauderbaugh and husband Scott of Bemidji, MN; David Schlatter and wife Lori of Wayland, IA; Doug Jones and wife Jennifer of Washington, IA; Amy Martin and husband Jeff of Columbus Junction, IA; Jason Hubbard of Alexandria, MN; Greg Jones and wife Emilee of Washington, IA; 5 step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1987; daughter, Sue Jones Schlatter in 1985; son, Ed Jones in 2015; brothers, James and Richard Custer; and sister, Betty Allbaugh Sarton.
