Walter D. A. Westen, age 92, of Washington died Sunday, June 06, 2010 at the Halcyon House in Washington following a brief illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Thursday, June 10th at the First Baptist Church in Washington with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Visitation will begin 2:00 pm Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Washington where the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 Wednesday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Walter was born on October 25, 1917 in rural Washington, Iowa the son of Martin and Augusta (Zieglowsky) Westen. He attended Havre country school. On May 4, 1938, Walter was united in marriage to Florence Graber in Washington, Iowa.
Walter farmed all of his life in Washington County taking in his last crop at the age of 90. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Washington where he held many offices. Walter taught Sunday school for many years. He enjoyed carpentry and was a DeKalb seed salesman for several years. In his earlier days, Walter and his brother Evert were well known in the Havre area for their proficiency in corn husking.
He is survived by four children including daughter Barbara Ramsey and husband John of Washington, Iowa; daughter Karen Hobbs and husband Tom of West Chester, Iowa; daughter Judy West of Washington, Iowa; and son Marty Westen and wife Joyce of Washington, Iowa. Walter is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence in 1996, one infant son James Martin Westen in 1949, one brother Evert Westen and one sister Edna Wilson.
