Viola was born March 5, 1918, in Jefferson County, Iowa, the daughter of Christian and Lydia (Kern) Pohren. She was united in marriage to Dale V. Norton on May 7, 1936, in Fairfield, Iowa. He died January 22, 2004.
As she entered the workforce, she was employed by various small grocery stores on the square in Washington and later by Fern's Bakery, retiring in the late 1960's.
Her love of family shined through everything she did, from lovingly made quilts and comforters to fresh-baked loaves of bread, cinnamon rolls and cookies to fresh produce from her garden. She would bake dozens of cookies, box them up along with a jar of this or a box of that, and send them to her grandchildren who lived out of state. Those boxes from Grandma were cherished by the receivers. There was always room for "one more" at the dinner table – add another board, place setting or two, and chairs. She made everyone feel welcome.
Viola is survived by her son, Virgil Norton and wife Norma of Colona, Illinois; daughter, Ruth Zeck of Waterloo; grandchildren: Kimberly Hunt and husband Scott of North Las Vegas, Nevada; Brian Norton of Ridgecrest, California; Shauna Zeck and husband Bob Uhl of Waterloo, Iowa; Jason Zeck and wife Jen of Dunlap, Illinois; nine great-grandchildren: Nikolas, Ashley, Zachary, Nathan, Robbie, Danielle, Tristan, Ella and David; one great-great-granddaughter, Serenity; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters: Dorothy Crile, Eunice Mann and Norma Hesseltine; four brothers: Clifford, Harold, Everette and Leonard Pohren; and one granddaughter, Angela (Norton) Beachler.
