Vernon W. "Vern" Hoskinson, age 82, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Rittman, Ohio, died Thursday, September 25, 2014, at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Ilene Schnicker officiating. Visitation will begin noon Monday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday to receive friends. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the M.L. Vern was born September 29, 1931 in Rittman, Ohio, the son of Bill and Marie (Hanzie) Hoskinson. He graduated from Rittman High School and from Industrial Trades Institute in Akron, Ohio. He was united in marriage to Janet Ruhlen on August 2, 1953 in Tiffin, Ohio.
Vern served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a Sergeant First Class. He worked for Con-Flo Manufacturing in Wadsworth, Ohio until job relocation brought him to Washington, Iowa in September of 1983. He then worked as a valve engineer for Crane Valves in Washington. Vern was an active member of the Jaycees in Rittman, Ohio and helped with the Soap Box Derby. He was an avid sports fan, coaching Peewee Football and following The Ohio State Buckeyes, and Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren of whom he was so very proud.
Vern is survived by his daughter, Lauren Powers and husband David of Washington, IA; David Hoskinson of North Royalton, Ohio; grandchildren: Rachel and Bill Hoskinson, Katie and Kelly Hoskinson, Seth Brokens, Troy Trafton and Marisa and Shannon Powers; great grandchildren: Olivia, Michael and Karlee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2001 and his son, Jeff Hoskinson, in 2009.
