Verna C. King, age 81, of Washington, Iowa, died Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Washington County Hospital following a short illness.
Visitation will begin noon Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 Tuesday evening. Interment will take place at a later date at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. In lieu of flowers a general memorial has been established. Verna C. King was born March 24, 1930 in Moline, Illinois the daughter of Charles and Wilma (Galloway) Dey. Verna graduated high school in East Moline, Illinois and later attended college in California. She was united in marriage to Jerry King on January 19, 1957 in East Moline, Illinois.
Verna has been a resident of Washington since 1967. She worked as a school aide at Stewart Elementary and later worked at Washington Manufacturing for eighteen years. Verna was employed as a sales representative for Illinois Bell Telephone Company while living in Illinois.
Verna was a member of the Faith Baptist Church, where she served as the choir director and was active on many committees. She had a passion for welcoming and visiting with new church members. She was a member of the Y Wives, and helped with the swim team at the Washington Community Y. She enjoyed volunteering at the Lake Darling Youth Center where she assisted with camp registration. Verna also enjoyed sewing.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry King of Washington, Iowa; son, Tim King and wife Michelle of Cave Creek, Arizona; daughter, Stephanie Young and husband Marty of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; four granddaughters: Sydney and Erin Young of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; and Samantha and Alison King of Cave Creek Arizona; brother, Marvin Dey and wife Jean of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; and sister, Lois Melin of Elgin, Illinois.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents.
