Verlee Mae Kaufman was born in Wayland, Iowa, on August 5, 1933, to Louie and Verna (Boese) Kaufman. She attended school in Wayland and graduated from Wayland High School in 1951. She was a diligent student, and she and her sister Marie walked three miles each day to school and back.
She married Harold Wylie on August 31, 1957, and worked with her husband on the family farm north of Washington while raising two daughters. Verlee appreciated nature, mowing the lawn, and celebrating the seasons, and loved spending time with the grandchildren and attending their various activities. She was also an avid Hawkeye fan and followed UNI sports. In later years, she enjoyed playing cards with friends at the Central Park Community Center in Washington and e-mailing family.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington and worked on the Kitchen Committee. In her early career she worked at Washington State Bank, and after her children were grown, at the Washington Evening Journal.
Verlee is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harold; daughters Susan (David) Adam from Kalona and Sara (Todd) Dew from Reed City, Michigan; three grandsons—Justin (Jenny) Adam from New Hampton, Jordan Adam from Cedar Falls, and Reese Dew of Reed City, Michigan; sisters Marie Blakestad of Humboldt and Velda (Keith) Hammel from LeRoy, Michigan; and brother Larry (Carole) Kaufman from Olds, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers—Vernon, Archie, and Richard Kaufman.
