Obituary

Verda Mae Asbury, age 85, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital.

Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Julie Poulsen officiating. Visitation will begin noon Friday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 Friday evening. Interment will take place at the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa at 4:00 pm Saturday. Memorials have been established for the Pleasantview Home in Kalona, Iowa. Verda was born September 8, 1924 in Clarence, Missouri the daughter of Otis Elmore and Edith Hope (Purdy) Mapes. She graduated from Burlington High School and attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Rayburn Lucas Asbury on September 28, 1945 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

She lived most of her life in the Burlington and West Burlington communities but also lived in New London, Ottumwa, Kalona and in Washington for the past two and a half years. She worked as Secretary of Personnel at the Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Iowa. Verda assisted her husband with the Asbury-Smith Auction Service where she was the bookkeeper and appraiser.

Verda attended the United Methodist Church in Washington, Iowa. She enjoyed her family and was caregiver for her husband for nearly 20 years. She enjoyed collecting carnival glass and quilting. Verda was a member of the Red Hat Society for many years.

She is survived by a daughter Debbie Patrick and husband Dennis of Topeka, Kansas; son Monte Asbury and wife Lori of Washington, Iowa; 7 grandchildren including Russell Patrick of West Burlington, Iowa; Amos Patrick and wife Molly of Estes Park, Colorado; Abi Reid and husband Kacey of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Keyera Patrick of Topeka, Kansas; Hannah Horton and husband Jimmie Jr. of Bay Village, Ohio; Ben Asbury and friend Ashley Seaba of Riverside, Iowa; Lucas Asbury of Washington, Iowa; four great grandchildren Cooper, Ian and Eliza Reid and Colten Asbury; as well as special friend T.J. Berdo of Washington, Iowa.

Verda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of nearly 50 years in 2001 and an infant sister.
