Obituary

Thomas William Tanner, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Maureen Howard officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening. Interment with Military Honors will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County, Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Washington Fire Department. Tom was born August 30, 1925 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Rudolph Jacob and Florence Ida (Egley) Tanner. He attended Washington High School and during that time he was drafted in to the United States Armym, where he served honorably during WWII which included the Battle of the Bulge. Upon completion of his service in 1946, he received his High School Diploma and attended Junior College in Washington. Tom was united in marriage to Charlane Johns on November 12, 1950 in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Tom volunteered for the Washington Fire Department for 62 years. He also worked for the Washington Oil Company and was a Parts Manager for 4 different automotive dealerships until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on the Washington City Council for 8 years. Tom loved volunteering for the Washington Fire Department, enjoyed gardening and was an Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by his wife, Charlane Tanner of Washington, IA; daughter, Jody Tanner of Washington, IA; daughter, Sally Tranberg and husband Jim of Clarksville, TN; two grandsons: Tommy Tranberg and wife Brittany of Clarksville, TN and Timothy Tranberg and wife Leah of Bainbridge, GA; two great-grandchildren: Wyatt and Katherine Ann Tranberg of Clarksville, TN; sister, Ann Labrie of Butte, MT; sister, Jane Lambertson of Butt, MT; brother, Jack Tanner and wife Jeanne of Butte, MT; nieces and nephews: Grace Scharff and husband Tim, Irl Lambertson and wife Lena, Susan Ruble and husband Dan, Jane Fuglevand and husband Paul; and Annie Labrie; and special friends, Brad and Pat Goff.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
