Obituary

Stanley William Chabal, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Halcyon House following a sudden illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2012 at the United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bob Wollenberg and Rev. Herb Yoder officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon Thursday at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Interment with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 29 will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for American Legion Post 29 for the World War II Honor Flight. Online condolences may be sent for Stan's family through the Jones-Eden website at www.jonesfh.com

Stanley William Chabal was born March 2, 1920 near Kalona, Iowa, the son of Ameal and Elsie (Patterson) Chabal. He attended Jackson Center School in Washington County, and graduated from Washington High School in 1938. He later attended Washington Junior College.

Stanley was united in marriage to Martha Faye Cherwinker of Haskins, Iowa by a Presbyterian minister in Kahoka, Missouri on April 10, 1943.

Stanley was inducted into the United States Army on May 22, 1942 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. He became a RADAR Specialist doing Highly Classified work for the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant from the Air Force on November 15, 1945 after serving for forty-two months. After his discharge from Federal service, he served in the Iowa State Guard for one year and the Iowa National Guard for three years.

Stanley farmed until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Washington American Legion Post 29 for more than sixty years. He was an active member of the Washington United Presbyterian Church. He was a St. Louis Cardinal fan, and an Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed going to the Riverside Casino.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Martha Chabal of Washington; daughter Sheila Corey of Columbia, Missouri; five grandchildren: Jeffery Madsen and Amy Mattley of Columbia, Missouri; Rachael Elvers of North Liberty, Iowa; Todd Elvers of Iowa City, Iowa; Tracey Madsen of Beaverton, Oregon; four great-grandchildren; brother Robert Chabal and wife Doris of Grundy Center, Iowa; and sister-in-law Dorothy Chabal of Washington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Marlene Elvers, brother Edward Chabal, sister Dorothy Marston, infant sister Mabel Chabal, son-in-law Louis Corey, and nephew Rob Chabal.
