Shirley York, age 76, of Ainsworth, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a lengthy illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Sunday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 Sunday afternoon. Interment will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. A memorial has been established for Mercy Hospice. Shirley York was born September 16, 1937 in Macomb, Illinois the daughter of John and Catherine (Duncan) Carey. She attended school in Macomb and later graduated from Washington High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Curt York on February 22, 1956.

Shirley and Curt have been residents of Ainsworth, Iowa for the past twenty years. Shirley worked at McCleery-Cummings until her retirement. She loved shopping and enjoyed baking and hosting family dinners. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her sisters to North Dakota and Colorado. She enjoyed Christmastime and spending time with her family.

Shirley is survived by husband Curt of Ainsworth, Iowa; three children: Dale P. York and wife Connie of Mandan, North Dakota; Mary York of Washington, Iowa; and Jeff York of Salem, Iowa; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters: Alice Dawson of Aurora, Colorado; Joan Collett and husband John of Washington, Iowa; and Joyce Nash and husband Brian of Washington, Iowa; and two brothers: Jimmy Carey and John Carey and wife Connie, both of Washington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter Ashley Dennis; three sisters: Darlene Jaspering, Mary Catherine Sheetz, and Donnalee Wagenknecht; and brother Richard Carey.
