Shirley Helen (Ferris) Pollack, age 91, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, August 3, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness.
Calling hours will begin noon Wednesday, August 6th at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. The family will also receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 8th, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bristol, Wisconsin. Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Fr. Roger Savage officiating.. Interment will take place at the St. Scholastica Cemetery in Bristol, WI. Memorials have been established for the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Shirley was born November 26, 1922, in King City, California, the daughter of Harold and Margaret (O'Gara) McGowan. She attended school in Whittier, California, and graduated from Whittier High School. Shirley was united in marriage to William Ferris on July 25, 1942, in Vallejo, California. She was later married to Andrew Pollack on February 1, 1972, in Waukegan, Illinois.
Shirley worked as a switchboard operator at International Harvester in Libertyville, Illinois and later at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, California. She had lived in Chicago, Illinois; Trevor, Wisconsin; California and has lived in Washington, Iowa since 1991. Shirley enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader, and loved all animals. She enjoyed making pheasant feather hats in her younger days. Shirley was an avid Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers fan and she loved socializing with family and friends.
She is survived by three daughters; Denise Fiebelkorn and husband Ron of Necedah, Wisconsin; Diane Gallagher and husband Bob of Washington, Iowa; Shirley Fernandez of Washington, Iowa; step son, David Pollack and wife Debra of Andover, Massachussets; four grandchildren: Michael Elsfelder and wife Kim of Salem, Wisconsin; Christine Iacucci and friend Mark of Bristol, Wisconsin; Joyce Lambert and husband Pete of Washington, Iowa; and Jeff Kube and wife Karen of Washington, Iowa. She is also survived by twelve great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband William Ferris in 1970; husband Andrew Pollack in 2008; and son-in-law, David Fernandez in 2011.
