Shirley I. Long, age 82, of Washington, Iowa died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at her residence after failing in health for the past six months.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Deb Schmidt officiating. Visitation will begin noon Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Shirley was born June 15, 1930 in Washington County, Iowa the daughter of Ernest and Alice (Augustine) Arnold. She attended the Red Brick School and also attended school in Washington and Jefferson Counties. Shirley was united in marriage to Howard O. Long on October 29, 1948 in Independence, Iowa.
Shirley had been employed by Advanced Ross Manufacturing, the McCleery Cumming Calendar Factory, and Washington Manufacturing. She owned and operated "The Hobby Shop" in Washington, Iowa, and she operated her own business, "Shirley's Noodles." She enjoyed arts and crafts and camping. Shirley and Howard enjoyed following their son Ed and his family at Bluegrass Festivals. She also enjoyed wintering in Texas with her husband.
She is survived by son Edward Long and fiancee Lisa Mosley of Burlington, Iowa; daughter Marsha Hampsher and husband Robin of Ainsworth, Iowa; two grandchildren: Emily Long Coppess and husband Eric of Nashville, Tennessee and Seth Hampsher and wife Shannon of Marion, Iowa; two great-grandchildren: Brileigh and Payton Hampsher; step-mother Cora Whitehead of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; half-sister Darlene Hebling of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and sister-in-law Berniece Arnold of Arizona.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Howard in 2007; granddaughter Sarah Hampsher; brother Wayne Arnold; and three sisters: Delores Long, Virginia Arnold, and Charlotte Beemblossom.
