Sandra Jean McAvoy, age 62, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a two month battle with cancer.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2016, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Maureen Howard officiating. Calling hours will begin 4:00 p.m. Thursday, June 9th at the Immanuel Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Sandra was born August 24, 1953, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Ross and Rosemary (Buschling) Apple. She graduated from Keokuk High School and attended Beautician School in Keokuk, Iowa. Sandra was united in marriage to Donald McAvoy on November 10, 1976, in Washington, Iowa.
Sandra taught at the Beautician School in Keokuk for a few years and following her marriage, she moved to Washington and worked at McCleery Cumming Co. for 24 years. She later worked at the Washington County Developmental Center and has worked the past three years at Orschlens in Washington. Sandra was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She loved to fish, knit, crochet and recently enjoyed adult coloring books.
She is survived by her husband, Donald McAvoy of Washington, Iowa; mother, Rosemary Apple of Quincy, Illinois; sister, Erica Richardson and husband Joe of Virginia; brother-in-law, Thomas McAvoy and wife Brenda of Grandview, Iowa; brother-in-law, Ronald G. McAvoy of Iowa City, Iowa; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Sandra was preceded in death by her father, and two sisters, Linda Hall and Barb Hall.
