Obituary

Rollin Clair "Ed" Edmondson, age 94, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Ames, Iowa, died Friday, January 13, 2012 at Halcyon House following a short illness.

Celebration of life services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Kelly Allard officiating. Visitation will begin 11:00 a.m. Sunday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 Sunday afternoon. Interment will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery at a later date. Memorials have been established for Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund or Hospice of Washington County. Rollin Clair Edmondson was born August 19, 1917 near Ainsworth, Iowa the son of Floyd H. and Blanche (Wiley) Edmondson. He graduated from Ainsworth High School and from Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. He worked as a bookkeeper for an implement dealer in Winchester, Illinois until October 24, 1940 when he enlisted in the Army at Peoria, Illinois. He served 33 months in North Africa, and Italy during World War II, one year in IndoChina (Saigon) during Vietnam, and 14 months in Korea from 1957-1958. On July 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Helen J. Barrett in Chicago, Illinois.

Rollin retired from the Army on July 1, 1961. He worked for the Iowa State University Library for twenty years retiring in October of 1982. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ames where he served on several committees, Kelley PTA and helped with various community projects while in Ames. Rollin enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife, gardening, doing carpentry work, and was a proud Iowa Stater. He and his wife moved to Washington in 2006 where they resided at Halcyon House and became members of the United Methodist Church. Rollin thoroughly enjoyed the many friends and activities at Halcyon House. He had the knack of never meeting a stranger and created "goodwill" amongst everyone he met.

He is survived by one son, William F. Edmondson, wife Deb, and granddaughters Jennifer and Amy of Ames, Iowa; one daughter, Barbara A. Edmondson of Washington, Iowa; sister, Myra Piotrowski of Muscatine, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Rollin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen in 2009, and three brothers, Preston, Richard and Jay.
