Robert Dale "Smoke" Glandon, age 89, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the Washington County Hospital following a short illness.
Celebration of life services will be held Friday, July 25, 2014 at 10:00 am at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Jim Cluney officiating. Visitation will begin noon Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Washington County All Vets Memorial. Robert was born November 29, 1924 in South English, Iowa, the son of Clarence and June (Shipman) Glandon. He was raised in the Webster and Sigourney communities. He has resided in Washington, Iowa, since 1949. Robert was united in marriage to Aletha L. Horton on March 5, 1950, in Washington, Iowa.
Robert served honorably in the United States Army from 1943 until 1948. He was a member of the 740th Tank Battalion receiving three battle stars. He worked as an auto mechanic for Ross Motors from 1949 until 1972 and then worked at Glandon's Westside Service until his retirement. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Washington.
He is survived by his wife, Aletha Glandon of Washington, Iowa; son, Terry Glandon and wife Jean of Washington, Iowa; son, Gary Glandon and wife Nancy of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Connie Owens and husband Rick of Ainsworth, Iowa; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and sister, Phyllis Renner of Sigourney, Iowa.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lyle and Marvin Glandon; two sisters, Madge Gapen and Betty Sheraden; and one granddaughter, Hannah.
