Robert L. Buffington, age 75, of Washington, Iowa died Tuesday, November 01, 2011 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2011 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Larson officiating. Visitation will begin noon Thursday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Wellman Baptist Church, Lending Hands or Washington County Hospice. Bob was born June 19, 1936 in Letts, Iowa the son of Layton L. and Bernadine (Chamberlain) Buffington. He graduated from Wyman High School in 1955. On March 10, 1956, Bob was united in marriage to Peggy J. Hall at the Spring Run Church.
Following high school, Bob worked for the railway laying rail ties. He later worked for a cabinet maker in Olds, Iowa, Tucker Chevrolet in Washington, Iowa and at Steele Lumber in Washington. He worked at Yoder Feed in Frytown, Iowa and later ran Buff's Feed-O-Matic in Frytown. In December of 1981 he opened Buff's Carpentry which he and his wife owned and operated until his retirement.
Bob has been a resident of Washington, Iowa since 1963, having lived in Crawfordsville for seven years prior to that. He was a member of the Wellman Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. Bob was a volunteer fireman, a member of the southeast Iowa Antique Car Club, member of the Pop and Johnny's Tractor Club and volunteered his time and labor at Midwest Old Threshers of nearly fifty years. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends over a cup of coffee. Bob lived for his grandkids and took pleasure in building items for them.
He is survived by his wife Peggy Buffington of Washington, Iowa; son Bryan Buffington and wife Cathy of Washington, Iowa; daughter Brenda VanHoosen and husband John of Baraboo, Wisconsin; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Larry Buffington and wife Norma of Winfield, Iowa; sister Diane Braet of Story City, Iowa; and sister-in-law Cindy Buffington of Winfield, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Rick Buffington and brother-in-law Marlan Braet.
