R.D. "Sam" Young, age 86, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington.

A time of visitation will begin 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorials have been established for Parkinsons Research, the Washington County Mini Bus or Washington County Hospice. Richard Dennis Young was born November 2, 1928, in Washington, Iowa,the son of Harold W. and Bertha (Welliver) Young. When he was in eighth grade, his classmates nicknamed him Sam, a name he answered to the rest of his life. Sam started school at Heights School and completed his schooling upon graduation from Washington Junior College.

Sam served with the 199th Engineers during the Korean War. On December 23, 1951, he was united in marriage with Beverly Jean Crandall. Sam was employed at Wolf Floral Company and later drove for the Washington County Mini Bus. Sam was an avid golfer and was a fan of Washington Demon and Iowa Hawkeye athletics.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Young of Washington, Iowa; son, Mike Young and wife Tracy of San Mateo, California; son, Marty Young and wife Stephanie of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; daughter, Sue Rich and husband Mike of Brighton, Iowa; grandchildren, Adam Rich and Stevie Stigers of Brighton, Iowa; Kyle Rich and wife Holly of Washington, Iowa; Sydney Waters and husband Tyler of Johnsburg, Illinois; Erin Young of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; Brian Young of San Mateo, California; great grandchildren, Braxton Rich of Brighton, Iowa; Sadie Waters and Cora Waters of Johnsburg, Illinois; sister, Darlene Kern and husband Don of Indianola, Iowa; and sister, Margaret Thompson and husband Frank of Burke, Virginia.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Max Young.
