Richard Donald Custer, age 86, of Wayland, Iowa, died peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2014, at his residence.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Darren Brown officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Tuesday evening. Interment will take place at Valley Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington, Washington County 4-H Horse & Pony Club or Paws & More Animal Shelter. Richard Donald Custer was born April 20, 1928, at his home in Washington, Iowa, the son of Edward Frank and Mabel Bell (Woods) Custer. He attended school in Washington, Iowa. He married Katherine Robbins in 1948. They later divorced. He was united in marriage to Jayne Berdo on May 29, 1969, in Plano, Illinois.

During his life he worked at Cargill Inc., Hanson Construction, the Milwaukee Railroad, Formax Feed Co., Reschly Construction, maintenance departments of the United Presbyterian Home and Parkview Home and later provided lawn mowing services. He loved his John Deere lawn mower. His hobbies were coon hunting, fishing, and collecting toy tractors and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Jayne Custer of Wayland, Iowa; children, Larry Custer and wife Sue of Heyworth, Illinois; Darla Custer of Debary, Florida; Elizabeth Leasure and husband Arnie of Washington, Iowa; Christina Miksch and husband Louis of Washington, Iowa; Amy Custer of Wayland, Iowa; and Andrew Custer and girlfriend Erika Laws of Washington. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one sister, Wanda Jones of Washington, Iowa.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven Custer; grandson, Tyler Baker; brother, James Custer and sister, Betty Sarton.
