Rachel Lois Pollock, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, following a short illness.

Memorial services will be held 6:30 p.m. Sunday, December 18th at the United Presbyterian Home in conjunction with Evensong services. Interment will take place at a later date at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the United Presbyterian Home. Rachel was born May 3, 1924 in Tanta, Egypt, the daughter of Dr. Howard Joseph S. and Vera (McLaughlin) Buchanan. Rachel attended school in Monmouth, Illinois, graduating from Monmouth High School. She graduated from Monmouth College with majors in English and Biology. Rachel was united in marriage to James W. Pollock on September 7, 1945, in Monmouth, Illinois. She later earned her Masters of Education Degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Rachel and Jim served with the Board of Foreign Missions of the United Presbyterian Church of North America for eleven years. Upon returning to the United States, Rachel was a homemaker and did private tutoring, homebound instruction and substitute teaching.

She lived in Egypt; Eskridge, Kansas; Hartford, Connecticut; and Bloomington, Indiana; before retiring to Washington, Iowa in 1989.

Rachel was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington, Iowa, where she was an Ordained Elder.

She is survived by her son, Howard James Pollock and wife Linda of Lawrence, Kansas; daughter, Juanita Minor and husband John of Bloomington, Illinois; daughter, Aida Jean Pollock of Bloomington, Indiana; daughter, Lois Singletary and husband David of Bloomington, Illinois; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Rev. James W. Pollock in 2013; one sister, Helen Louise Buchanan Coulter; and one great-granddaughter.
