Pauline "Paula" Maxine Shafer, age 69, of Coppock, Iowa, died Friday, May 19, 2023, at Aspire of Washington following a decline in health.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 22, 2023, at the West Chester Cemetery with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County. Pauline was born May 31, 1953, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Madge Marie (Brock) Johnson. She attended school in Washington, Iowa. Paula was united in marriage to John "Butch" Shafer on October 18, 1969.

Paula lived most of her life in Coppock, Iowa. She was employed at Crane Valves in Washington, Iowa, and later worked at W.C.D.C. She liked fishing, doing puzzles, and caring for her animals.

She is survived by four grandchildren: Tiffany (Matt) Crawford of Washington, Iowa; Jason Shafer and fiancé, Mariah of Wisconsin; Melissa (Amber) Shafer of Wellman, Iowa; Dakota Shafer of Washington, Iowa; two great grandchildren; and siblings: Connie Rockhold of Huntsville, Alabama; Paul "PeeWee" Johnson; Rhonda (Craig) Wharton of Brighton, Iowa; Tammy (Dave) Bryan of Iowa City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Paula was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Butch Shafer in 2012; son, Jamy M. "Jamey" Shafer in 2011; sister, Vera Wagenknecht and sister, Linda Crossett.
