Nicholaus F. "Nick" Gevock, age 80, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 05, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following complications from a stroke.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Visitation will begin noon Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Prayer services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Military honors will be accorded following the Mass at St. James Catholic Church. Interment will take place at the Cambrian Cemetery in rural Columbus Junction at a later date. Nicholaus was born May 12, 1935 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Alex and Dorothy (Bruty) Gevock. He attended St. James Catholic School through the eighth grade and graduated from Washington High School in 1953. Nick served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Sadie Peters on November 9, 1957 in Washington, Iowa.
Nick was a lifelong resident of Washington where he worked as a Postal Clerk at the Washington Post Office for over 30 years retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council and was a member of the St. James School Board. Nick was a lifetime member of the VFW and was proud to have been a member on the 2012 Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He enjoyed wintering in Texas with his wife, playing Pepper and other card games, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid New York Yankees fan.
He is survived by his wife, Sadie Gevock of Washington, Iowa; four daughters: Deb Amsbaugh and husband John of Polk City, Iowa; Je Muhlenbruch and husband Steve of Latimer, Iowa; Jo Waters and husband David of Phoenix, Arizona; Angie Gevock of McAllen, Texas; six grandchildren, Megan, Morgan, Dillon, Abby, Shannon and Nick; and two great grandchildren, Braxton and Trennen. Nick is also survived by one sister, Doris West and husband Tom of Wickenburg, Arizona.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Viola Lauderdale and Kathy Hackert.
