Obituary

Myrl Eugene Leavitt, age 93, of Washington died Sunday July 11, 2010, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a decline in health.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Saturday July 17, 2010 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Washington with President Douglas Campbell and Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 pm Friday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established to the United Presbyterian Home and the United Presbyterian Church. Myrl was born on August 26, 1916 east of Mt. Zion in Van Buren County, Iowa to Charles L. and Hattie E. (Wiley) Leavitt. He graduated from Keosauqua High School and was united in marriage to Birdie Bonnett on August 20, 1942 in Memphis, Missouri. Myrl worked in the Ordnance Plant in Burlington before moving to Washington where he and a brother-in-law, Orville Whitcanack, operated a gasoline service station for many years. In 1953 he joined State Bond and Mortgage Company as a salesman and later served as district manager. He worked for other firms during his lengthy career in financial services, retiring from Multi-Financial Securities in 2005 with over 50 years of service to his clients. Myrl enjoyed astronomy and traveling.

Myrl is survived by his wife, Birdie Leavitt of Washington; two sons, Richard Leavitt and wife Susan of Lansing, Michigan; David Leavitt and wife Judith of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren Kristine Shryock of New York City; Joseph Levit and wife Preethi Mahadeviah of New York City; John Leavitt and wife Amy of Santee, California; two great grandchildren, Jane and Jackson Leavitt of Santee, California; and one sister, Mary Louise Whitcanack of Cantril.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Maurine Moore; and two brothers-in-law, Orville Whitcanack and Fred Moore.
