Mildred N. Whitman, age 88, of Washington, Iowa, died quietly on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at her residence.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at Lake Darling Youth Center. Private family burial will take place at a later date. Memorials have been established to the Midwest Bible Camp. Online condolences may be sent for Mildred's family through the web at

Mildred was born March 27, 1924 in Brookfield, Missouri, the daughter of Ervin and Marguerite (Raybourn) Burgess. She attended school in Lawrence, Kansas where she graduated from high school. On October 23, 1942, Mildred was united in marriage to Walter Whitman in Ottawa, Kansas. He was killed in action in 1950 while serving his country during the Korean War Conflict.
Mildred has resided in Washington, Iowa since 1995. She previously lived in Clinton, Iowa for five years and Lawrence, Kansas for twelve years. Mildred was a homemaker and owned a religious bookstore in Marshalltown, Iowa for a number of years. She was the Secretary for a church group in Des Moines, Iowa for a number of years and was employed at a Senior Dining Center while living in Kansas. She was a member of the Church of Christ, having taught Children's Bible Classes for many years. She also served as Camp Cook for over twenty years at Midwest Bible Camp. She enjoyed her family, reading, sewing and gardening.
She is survived by two daughters; Doloris James and husband Hal of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Ellen Lucas and husband John of Indianola, Iowa; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and one brother, Frank Burgess of Topeka, Kansas.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1950, and one brother, Ervin Burgess.
