Maymie was born January 29, 1927 in Laquey, Missouri, the third child of Emory and Dorothy (Barrett) Burkett. She attended school in Kinross, Iowa while her parents farmed in Greene Township, Iowa County, and graduated from North English High School in 1945. In 1946 she married Glenn D. Garringer of rural Parnell, a veteran who just returned from war. Glenn passed away in 1985.

She and Glenn resided in Iowa County where they farmed, and later moved to the Coralville/Iowa City area. The family resided there until moving to Orlando, Florida in the early 1960's. They returned to Iowa while the three older boys served in the Vietnam War. They lived in the Tipton, North English, Keswick and Washington areas. Maymie was a homemaker, assisted her husband in the family farm operations, and was a waitress, cook, and restaurant manager. Later in life, she was a nurse's aide for nineteen years at the Washington County Hospital Long Term Care Unit.

On February 19, 1994, Maymie was united in marriage to Dean W. Luers of rural Washington, where they lived and farmed until moving to Washington in 2005. Maymie was a member of the HJ neighborhood club for many years. She was a faithful member of the Marion Avenue Baptist Church, joining shortly after its founding. There, she was a member of the Jolly 60's, and she and Dean visited the elderly each week.

Maymie is survived by her husband, Dean W. Luers of Washington, Iowa; five sons: Dale E. (Jennifer) Garringer of Busan, South Korea; Laurance D. (Evelyn) Garringer of Osceola, Missouri; Joseph L.
