Mary Svatos, age 90, of Fairbanks, Alaska, formerly of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, June 26, 2023, under hospice care.

Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Visitation will begin 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Mary was born April 10, 1933, in Stanwood, Iowa, the daughter of Darrell and Florence (Burgess) Hepner. She attended school in Stanwood, Iowa. Mary was united in marriage to Raymond Svatos on February 23, 1950 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mary and Raymond lived in Washington, Iowa, until 1978. They moved to California and in 2002 they moved to Alaska.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Helen Critchfield of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter, Linda Downs of Mojave, California; daughter, Sandy Bussey of Fairbanks, Alaska; son, Joseph Svatos of Swannanoa, North Carolina; and son, Raymond Svatos Jr. of Ainsworth, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2008; four children: Paul, Vicki, Phyllis and David; one great grandson; brother, Dale Hepner; and sister, Madge Robinson.
