Mary E. Soper, age 88, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017 at the Halcyon House in Washington.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Rev. Kwang Song officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church and the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund. Mary was born January 24, 1929 in Missouri, the daughter of Ralph and Grace (Upton) Rehmel. She graduated from Independence High School and from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon. Mary was united in marriage to Delbert L. Soper on December 29, 1961 in Independence.

Mary taught for a short time in Altoona before moving to Washington in 1961. She then taught Home Economics in Washington until her retirement. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, P.E.O. and TTT. Mary enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing bridge and helping with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Heisdorffer and husband Phil of Keota, IA; son, David Soper and wife Bonnie of Cedar Rapids, IA; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Delbert in 2006.
