Obituary

Mary Ann Horak, age 82, of Riverside, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017, at her residence.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2017, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Bernie Weir officiating. Calling hours will begin 10:00 a.m. Sunday, April 2, 2017, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the Rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Mary was born September 8, 1934 at her home in rural Jefferson County, Iowa to Joseph and Anna (Tenka) Janecek. She married Clifford L. Horak on November 9, 1963 at St. Mary's Church in Riverside, Iowa.

Mary graduated from Tri-County School in Thornburg, Iowa in 1952 and the Mercy School of Nursing in Iowa City, Iowa in 1955. She practiced her profession in the states of California, Illinois and Iowa. After raising her family, Mary worked at the Pleasantview Nursing Home in Kalona, Iowa for 11 years before retiring. She had previously worked at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, and Mercy Hospital and the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City.

Mary was a stay at home mom while her children were growing up. She raised a large garden and did a lot of canning and freezing of the food they grew. Mary enjoyed going to dances, listening to music, reading and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of the HJ Club and was an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Clifford Horak of Washington, IA; six children: Peg Rogers of Washington, IA; Cheryl Horak of Cedar Rapids, IA; Jon Horak and wife Lindsey of Wellman, IA; James Horak and wife Tammi of Riverside, IA; Sue Donaldson and husband Brian of Wellman, IA; and Jerry Horak of Riverside, IA; eight grandchildren: TJ Rogers of Ames, IA; Cameron Rogers of Tiffin, IA; Mikayla Rogers of Washington, IA; Jesi and Jacob Donaldson of Wellman, IA; Louis Horak of Riverside, IA; Zachary Willman of Riverside, Iowa; and Andrew Horak of Wellman, IA.

Also surviving are her two sisters: Barbara Thomann of Riverside, IA and Alberta Thomann of Richland, IA; and one brother, Joseph Janecek of Riverside, IA; her in-laws, Dale and Patricia (Horak) Bruegge of Washington, IA; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers-in-law: Don and Lawrence Thomann; sister-in-law, Carolyn Janecek; and two nephews: Wayne Thomann and Daniel Thomann.
