Mary G. Coon, age 77, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a fall leading to hip surgery and later cardiac arrest.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Dennis Martin officiating. Calling hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Monday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for Sonshine Outreach of Washington or the American Heart Association. Mary was born December 24, 1946, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Paul F. and Alberta (Godfrey) Evans. She grew up alongside her brother, Paul "Butch" Evans and was later joined by siblings Carol Greiner and Tim Evans all of Washington, Iowa. Mary graduated from Washington High School in 1965 and was united in marriage to James Coon on July 12, 1969.
Mary and Jim lived in Haskins and Ainsworth, Iowa, while owning and operating Haskins Feed & Grain. In 1987, they moved to Lexington, Iowa.
Mary was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was a talented crafter, creating many gifts out of needlepoint, crochet and plastic canvas. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed collecting cookbooks. Mary enjoyed genealogy and spent countless hours researching family history and collecting printed obituaries for the Washington Genealogical Society.
She will be missed by her husband of 55 years, Jim Coon; brother, Paul Evans; sister, Carol (Dave) Greiner; and brother Tim (Michal) Evans all of Washington, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Shaffer of Missouri, Linda Raper of Oklahoma, and Shirley (Nick) Pace of California; nieces and nephews including Tammy Vittetoe with whom she had a special rapport; Tom Evans, Bret Greiner, Tyler Evans, and Tenia Fogle all of Washington, Iowa; Tara Roberts of Mooresville, North Carolina; and Elizabeth Schaapveld of North Liberty, Iowa; as well as many great nieces and great nephews. She was often referred to as their grandma and felt honored with the title.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sisters-in-law, Sharon Evans and Mary Lou Krotz and husband Wilbur; brothers-in-law, Dwayne Shaffer and Rod Raper; and one nephew, Terry Evans.
