Martha Ann Chalupa, age 80, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the University of Iowa following complications from a medical procedure.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Calling hours will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery in rural Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Sonshine Ministry or Grace Community Church. Online condolences may be sent for Martha’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
Martha Ann was born August 11, 1945, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of John C. and Lena (Watson) Graves. She attended school in Gower, Missouri, graduating from Gower High School in 1963. Martha graduated from Park College in Parkville, Missouri, with a degree in Music, and later received her Nursing Degree from Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma. Martha was united in marriage to Carl Chalupa on June 22, 1992, at the Pleasant Hill Church south of Washington.
Martha was a lifelong nurse, working in several hospitals. She lived in Missouri, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Utah, before moving to Washington, Iowa, in 2004. She was a member of Grace Community Church, participated in the Washington Municipal Band, and was active in the Washington Community Theater. Martha played the piano and organ for her church and, over the years, directed the church choir. She enjoyed golfing, sewing, reading, doing crosswords, Sudoku, and playing dominoes. Martha was always up for a HOT cup of coffee, and she was especially proud of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Chalupa of Washington, Iowa; son, John (Mandy) Pollard of Checotah, Oklahoma; daughter LeeAnn (Jonathan) Chalupa of Wellman, Iowa; daughter, Deb (Jon) Fox of Roy, Utah; daughter, Lisa (Carl) Rose of Ogden, Utah; daughter, Lori (Stacy) Mascaro of Salt Lake City, Utah; son, Scott (Brenda) Chalupa of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter, Teri (Greg) Bennett of Ogden, Utah; grandchildren: Ethan and Hudson Pollard; Hannah, Hailey, and Matthew Chalupa; Ryan Woodworth, Sierra Teets, and JD Fox; Dallas Draper and Texie Jonsson; Miki Hunsaker, Morgan Strickling, and Hazen Mascaro; Jaden and Justyn Chalupa; and Bailee Chalupa, Hadley Brennan, and Rylie Remmer; as well as numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, John Emmitt (Marge) Graves of Grinnell, Iowa; and numerous Chalupa in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jim Pollard; granddaughter, Hope Chalupa; sister, Mary Lu Graves; and brother, Jim Graves.
