Martha Faye Cherwinker Chabal, 94, passed away Sunday morning, May 26, 2019. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday June 7th, at Elm Grove Cemetery with Rev. Erin Kaye officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Martha was born at home in Gladwin, IA on September 27, 1925 to Fayette Cherwinker and Gladys Dawson Cherwinker. She married Stanley William Chabal April 10, 1943 in Kahoka, Missouri. They were married for over 67 years. Martha graduated from Washington High School, with the Class of 1943. Martha worked alongside her husband on their farm, as well as various jobs in Washington. She was also a 4H leader in her community.
Martha and her husband were both life members of the American Legion Auxiliary, and dedicated many hours serving, helping, and meeting the needs of local veterans and their families. She was a member of the Washington United Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughters: Marlene Elvers and Sheila Corey; half-sisters: Mary Lu Ellen Gesling and Nellie Brock, and her loving husband Stanley Chabal.
Martha is survived by five grandchildren: Jeff Madsen, Tracey Madsen, Amy Dati (Edward), Rachael Schmerbach (Adam) and Todd Elvers; five great-grandchildren: Nichole Stillman (Logan), Eric Mattley, Emily Madsen, Andrew Madsen, and Phoenix Schmerbach; one niece: Arlynne Adams; and one nephew; Stuart Kolosick.
The family is grateful to the Cedarhurst of Columbia, MO staff, and Hospice Compassus, who both provided outstanding care for Martha.
