Marjorie Ruth (Benson) Longer, age 88, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after seven years of an extended illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Don Collings officiating. The family will receive friends at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Friday before the service. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Marjorie was born October 15, 1924 in rural Washington County, Iowa the daughter of Newton J. and Elsie (Barnhart) Benson. She graduated from Washington High School in 1942. On October 15, 1947, she was united in marriage to Daryl E. Longer at the Prairie Flower Baptist Church in Washington.
Marjorie was a life resident of Washington County. She worked as a secretary at the Washington High School for fifteen years, retiring in 1990. She was an active member of Prairie Flower Baptist Church where she was the church pianist, Sunday School Teacher and Vacation Bible School Teacher. Marjorie was also an avid sports fan.
She is survived by son, Tom Longer and wife Chris of Indianola, Iowa; son, Doug Longer and wife Terre of Dayton, Ohio; five grandchildren: Brittni and Nathan Longer of Indianola, Iowa and Madison, Matthew, and Megan Longer of Dayton, Ohio; and one sister, Doris Chase and husband Manley of Denver, Colorado.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2005, three brothers: Ward Benson, Paul Benson, and Robert Benson; and an infant brother, Wayne Benson.
