Margaret "Maggie" Roth died Saturday, February 18, 2012, at her residence after a lengthy illness, though she was active until one week ago.
Celebration of life services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 23, 2012, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington with Pastor Al Kruse officiating. Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Wednesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established to WACAN, the Domestic Violence Intervention Board, or AAUW Scholarship Committee. Maggie was born August 1, 1928 in Wentworth, South Dakota, the daughter of Donald and Winifred (Fritze) Goodnow. She graduated from Iowa City High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa, and later went on to earn her Master's degree from the University of Iowa Wendell Johnson School of Speech and Hearing. She lived in Perry, Iowa, for four years before moving to Washington, where she had lived since 1967.
Maggie worked as a Speech Pathologist through the Grant Wood Area Education Agency, and served the Washington area exclusively through Grant Wood. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Washington, where she served as an usher and a greeter.
Maggie was active in many organizations in the Washington area. She served as the County Committee Chairperson of the Planned Parenthood Board, and ran the book sale for ten years. She was on the Domestic Violence Intervention Board in Washington and Iowa City and she was also active on the Washington Against Child Abuse and Neglect (WACAN) Board. She served on the scholarship selection committee for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was also past President. Maggie was also proud to be the first female president of the Washington Community Y, and past President of the YWCA.
Maggie belonged to many groups including the Friends of the Library, T.T.T., the Red Hat Society (in the "Last of the Red Hat Mamas"), the YWCA Endowment Committee, Y's Men and Women, various Bridge clubs, and an investment club.
Maggie was an avid reader and golfer. She belonged to the Lagos Acres Golf and Country Club, and always insisted on walking with her clubs.
Maggie is survived by four daughters: Christy Ballard of Washington, Iowa; Cathy O'Hanlon of Burlington, Iowa; Julie Ormsby and husband Bob of Indianola, Iowa; and Janet Rich and husband Scott of Washington, Iowa; 10 grandchildren including Andrea Hunt and husband Tad of Washington, Iowa; Ian Ballard and wife Andrea of Columbus Junction, Iowa; Cena Relfe and husband J.R. of Washington, Iowa; Chad Schneider of Indianola, Iowa; Ehren Schneider of Burlington, Iowa; Marissa Wasinski and husband Steve of Blaine, Minnesota; Noah Ormsby of Indianola, Iowa; Kelsey Liska and husband Mike of Granger, Iowa; Kassey Rich of Los Angeles, California; and Kaleb Rich of Rockford, Illinois; five great-grandchildren Elyse Hunt, Ethan Hunt, Alana Schneider, Jaxon Wasinski, and Makenyn Liska; brother Robert Goodnow of Raleigh, North Carolina; and aunt Marge Carlson of Edina, Minnesota.
Maggie was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Goodnow.
