Marcus Adrian McCarthy passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on March 19, 1951 in Washington, Iowa. After attending local schools, Marcus spent a year at a Catholic Seminary in Kansas City before earning a B.A. in Accounting from the University of Iowa.

Marcus married Melinda Eaton on August 13, 1977 at St. James Parish in Washington. They relocated to Houston in 1982, where they spent 44 years as Marcus completed his accounting career.

Marcus was passionate about sports, music, and politics, and excelled both academically and athletically. In high school, he played defensive back for the WHS Demons, helping lead the team to an undefeated season and a conference championship. His game-saving tackle that caused a serious shoulder injury is still remembered by teammates and friends as a sign of his determination and resilience.

Marcus's enthusiasm for sports continued throughout his life. He remained a devoted Hawkeye, K.C. Chiefs, and Houston Texans fan. He was fond of Pink Floyd and was known for quoting one of their lyrics at just the right moment. A lifelong hobbyist, Marcus assembled model train layouts, built miniature car collections, collected coins, and offered pithy commentary on national politics. Marcus was also recognized for his demolition derby skills and his knack for somehow keeping his jalopy running to the end for victory.

Marcus loved his family. None of us will ever forget his support for Jeff and his care for mom and dad during their time of need. He also loved his dogs, and at one time, a beloved rabbit, a nod to his 4-H county fair days. His favorite dessert was his mother's strawberry-pop cake, and he always preferred a Mountain Dew.

Despite his many interests, Marcus regularly contributed to church and charitable projects, reflecting his belief that a consequential life includes service to others. Marcus was proud to follow in his father's footsteps as a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

Marcus was loyal, outspoken, and kind-hearted. His unique flair left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Marcus was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Dorothy McCarthy, and siblings Justin, Jeanette, John, and Jeffrey. He is survived by his wife Mindy, and siblings Mike, Joe, Monica, Marty (Judy), Jim (Ann), Mary, Michelle (Blake) Brown and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held at St. Edith Stein Catholic Church in Houston, Texas on June 18, 2026. A Celebration of New Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery.
