Obituary

Marcella D. (Wenger) Atkinson, age 87, of Washington died Friday, September 10, 2010 at the Halcyon House in Washington following a lengthy illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 14th at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington with Pastor Steven Koch officiating. Visitation will begin 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church where the family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. and following services. Interment will take place at the Good Hope Cemetery in Titonka, Iowa at a later date. Memorials have been established for Hospice. Marcella was born March 31, 1923 in Emmet County, Armstrong, Iowa the daughter of Herman and Hazel (Vigdal) Askeland. She attended school in Armstrong, Iowa. On April 3, 1942 she was united in marriage to Vernon Walter Wenger in Davenport, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1974. Marcella was later married to Kenneth M. Atkinson on February 17, 985 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded Marcella in death in 2005.

Marcella assisted her husband with the family farm operation. She later worked for Snap On Tools and Armstrong Rim and Wheel in Armstrong, Iowa. She enjoyed reading, shopping, bowling and playing cards. She was a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka, Iowa; the Lutheran Church in Armstrong, Iowa and the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington, Iowa. She was voted mother of the year by the Federation Club in Titonka. In 2005 Marcella moved to the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa to be near her family.

Marcella is survived by her daughter Sherry Ives and husband Dennis of Washington, Iowa; granddaughter Thresa Moeller and husband Thomas and their children Spencer and Dalton of Washington; grandson Chuck Ives and his children Patrick, Kaley and Jacob of Fairfield, Iowa; and granddaughter Ann Williams of California. She is also survived by her brother Herman Askeland Jr. and wife Grace of Armstrong, Iowa; step children Janet Beargeon and husband Pete of Sioux City, Iowa; Karen Mitchell and husband Don of Armstrong, Iowa; Amy Zishka of Monterey, California; three step granddaughters, five step grandsons and ten step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Wenger, husband Kenneth Atkinson, son Barry Wenger and step daughter Sharon Roland.
