Lucy Grace
Landon
January 30, 1938 – May 10, 2026
Born January 30, 1938, in Baltimore, MD, Lucy Grace Ward Landon, age 88, passed away on May 10, 2026, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington IA. Her family lived in Parkville, MD and Sayville, NY during Lucy’s preschool and public school years. Graduating from high school as class salutatorian, she studied for two years at Macalester College. The next three years were spent at Boston School of Occupational Therapy (now part of Tufts University). Lucy was an occupational therapist in New York City for eight years before she and her husband joined the staff of a Christian boarding school in Stony Brook, NY. When that school moved to Brockville, Ontario, Canada, they became landed immigrants of Canada while maintaining citizenship in the USA. In 1985 Lucy returned to the United States, settling in Iowa, where she was employed in retail sales and childcare. She lived in Iowa 1985-2026 except for four years with a son and his family in Snohomish, WA.
Lucy married Richard Durrell Landon of Oakfield, NY, on April 4, 1964, at Marble Collegiate Church, New York City. He died in 1983 while they lived in Brockville, Ontario, Canada.
Lucy’s creativity was evidenced through music (viola, bagpipes, flute, violin), cooking & baking, handwork (crocheting, counted cross-stitch & knitting), and painting. Soon after moving to the United Presbyterian Home, Washington, IA, (2014) she founded a cribbage club to continue that hobby.
Lucy was baptized in a Methodist Church, Parkville, MD, and confirmed at First Congregational Church, Sayville, NY. Her life/faith journey took her into the Anglican Church in Canada and back to United Methodist churches in Iowa (West Branch, North Liberty & Washington) and Washington State (Snohomish). Living her faith included being a Stephen Minister, food pantry volunteer, knitting prayer shawls and Bible study.
Lucy is survived by her sons: Christopher Ward Landon (Mary), Surprise AZ and Timothy George Landon (Kellie), Marion IA; grandchildren Peyton (Caidan McCarville), Leo, Spencer, Killian, and Poppy; great-grandchildren Lily Mitchell and Tymothy McCarville; sisters Judith Heretelendy (Eugene) and Anita Burnett (Gary); sister-in-law Ann Perfitt; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Lucy was preceded in death by parents Fred C and E Grace Ward (1989 & 1994); niece Cynthia Burnett (1986); sister Marlene P Stanfield (1999); brother-in-law Robert Landon (2012); sister-in-law Betty Landon (2015); brother-in-law Doug Perfitt (2017) and great grandson Beau Landon-McCarville (2023).
Lucy suggested that memorial gifts benefit Doctors Without Borders or Heifer Project International. Services will be held at a later date. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent for Lucy’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
