Loretta Jean Netherland, age 87, of Washington, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at her residence.

A private graveside service with military honors will take place at the Ottumwa Cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa. A general memorial has been established. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent for Loretta’s family at www.jonesfh.com.

Loretta was born on December 13, 1938, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of William W. and Bessie M. (Evans) Carnes. She graduated from Ottumwa High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1957 until 1958.

During her time in the service, Loretta worked as a morning clerk. She later worked as a waitress prior to her retirement. Loretta enjoyed crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, and listening to Elvis Presley. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Loretta is survived by her daughter, Becky Waltman of Washington, Iowa; granddaughter, Tasha (Rob) Hesseltine of Washington, Iowa; grandson, Justin Lough of Galesburg, Illinois; granddaughter, Leanna Lough of Washington, Iowa; granddaughter, Amanda Netherland of Davenport, Iowa; and granddaughter, Mackenzie Netherland-Carder of Washington, Iowa; several great-grandchildren; her brother, William L. Carnes; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, James L. Netherland Sr.; daughter, Mary “Faye” Lough; three grandsons; three sisters; and her late husband, James Netherland.
