Lonny Milligan, age 78, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020.
Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2020 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Kwang Song officiating. Military honors will be accorded. Calling hours will begin at noon on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Social distancing guidelines set forth by the state will be followed at both the service and visitation. Interment will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa at a later date. Memorials have been established for the Washington American Legion Post 29 and the Washington Kiwanis AMers. Lonny was born June 16, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Joseph Dale and Berneda (Newman) Milligan. He graduated from Urbandale High School in 1959. Lonny served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Jo Ann Kline on September 3, 1965 in Knoxville, Iowa. Lonny and Jo raised their two daughters in Urbandale before moving to Washington in 1989.
Lonny worked as a salesman most of his life selling nuts, bolts, bricks and tile. Jo and Lonny owned and operated Korner Kremery for many years. He was very active in the Washington Kiwanis AMers and in the Washington American Legion Troop 29. During his time with the American Legion, Lonny helped with fundraising and made sure that each classroom at the local schools had an American flag. He was also a member of the Urbandale Jaycee's and F Troop in Washington. Lonny was a High School and Junior High volleyball referee for several years and helped at an auction barn. He enjoyed antiquing with Jo and often watched Antique Roadshow. Lonny loved history, particularly military history, and watching old movies. He devoted much of his time to bettering his community and was voted Citizen of the Year. Lonny loved his family dearly, and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his two daughters: Shannon (JD) Unternahrer of Washington, IA; and Heather (Andy) Sterner of Washington, IA; grandchildren: Marie (Matt) Swalin, Michael, Tony, Adrian, and Braxton Unternahrer and David, Kinser, and Frances Cortum; great-grandchildren: Maylee Swalin and Madisyn Swalin; brother, Mark (Carolyn) Milligan of Wheaton, IL; sister, Marcia (Mike) Faust of White Bear Lake, MN; brother, Tom (Deb Kennedy) Milligan of Amana, IA; sisters-in-law, Pat Milligan and Maxine Bruinekool, both of Des Moines, IA; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2019; brother, Russ Milligan; and brother-in-law, Robert Bruinekool.
