Linda Lou Waddle of Iowa City, Iowa, died Monday, September 28, 2015, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Linda was born November 24, 1936, in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Carroll Chester "Tad" and Mary Ellen (Isham) Van Doren. She graduated from Webster City High School in 1954 and also from Webster City Junior College. Linda received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Library Science from the University of Northern Iowa and received her Master's Degree in Library and Informational Sciences from the University of Iowa.
Following graduation, Linda worked as a Librarian for the Hudson School District from 1961 until 1963. She worked as the School Librarian at Cedar Falls High School from 1963 until 1990 during which time she also was an Instructor at U.N.I. in the Department of Library Science. After moving to Chicago, Illinois, Linda worked as the Deputy Executive Director of Young Adult Library Services in Chicago from 1991 until her retirement in 2002. Following her retirement she moved to Iowa City, Iowa.
Linda was a member of the American Library Association, the Iowa Library Association and the National Education Association. She was honored to have authored the following articles that appeared in professional journals: "School Media Matters," "Library Services to Youth," and "Cheap CE, Providing Continuing Education with Limited Resources." In 1990, Linda was the recipient of the AASL/SIRS Intellectual Freedom Award and was named the Iowa Educational Media Association "Media Professional of the Year." She was an avid reader and was equally interested in keeping informed about current events. Linda was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Her favorite things were libraries, books and cats.
She is survived by one son, Steven Waddle and wife Brenda of Cedar Falls, Iowa; granddaughter, Lauren Waddle of Waverly, Iowa; sister, Mickey Van Doren of Iowa City, Iowa; sister, Karen Moenck and husband John of Washington, Iowa; four nieces and nephews and four great nieces and nephews.
The Jones & Eden Funeral Home of Washington, Iowa, is assisting the family with arrangements. No services are scheduled. Memorials have been established for the Cedar Falls High School Library. Online condolences may be sent for Linda's family through the web at
