Leonard Allen Llewellyn, age 82, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals following a three month illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2015, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Stiles officiating. General calling hours will be held from noon until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church. Masonic Lodge services will be held 9:45 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society or the United Methodist Church. Leonard was born February 16, 1933, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Walter A. and Grace LaRue (Ward) Llewellyn. He graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1950. Leonard was united in marriage to Bess Schmidt on November 21, 1954, in Washington, Iowa. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Leonard lived all of his adult life in Washington, Iowa. He worked at the Washington Evening Journal where he was Business Partners with Dave Elder, Bill Shannon and Charles Morris. Leonard later owned and operated The Print Shop from 1987 until his retirement in 1992.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Washington Masonic Lodge # 26, K.A.A.B.A. Shrine, Washington Noon Kiwanis Club, and the Washington Golf and Country Club where he participated in Men's League for many years. For many years, Leonard sponsored the Journal team for the local bowling league. He enjoyed wintering in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife since 1992. Leonard was proud to have participated in the 2012 Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
He is survived by his wife, Bess Llewellyn of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Peggy Neff and husband Ken of Columbia, Missouri; son, David Llewellyn and wife Renee of Manchester, Missouri; and sister, Catherine McGlothlin of Weatherford, Texas.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Edith Howe.
