Larry A. "Gus" Manning Sr., age 67, of Washington, died Saturday, May 7, 2011 at his residence following a six week decline in health.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cottonwood Church in Wayland with Rev. Linda Renken officiating. Visitation will begin 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date in Cottonwood Cemetery. Larry was born January 3, 1944 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa the son of Robert and Erma (Lee) Manning. He attended school in Mt. Pleasant and Washington, Iowa. On February 20, 1970 he was united in marriage to Sue Vinton in Washington, Iowa. He served in the United States Army for two years.
Larry worked for George Norman Tree Service, Crane Valves and worked for Mose Levy for 33 years retiring on January 1, 2009. Larry worked with his cousin Lyle Manning Sr. for 30 years building homes, remodeling homes and doing general carpentry work. He enjoyed camping, fishing, working in his workshop and spending time with his family and grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Manning of Washington, Iowa; daughter Tammy Valentine of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Danna Knerr and husband Rusty of Washington, Iowa; son, Larry Manning Jr. and wife Jann of Washington, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Wendy, Dusty, Whitney, Matthew, Cassie, Janea, Olivia and Hannah; as well as three great grandchildren Rylie, Jack and Jensen. Larry is also survived by three brothers LeeRoy Metcalf of Washington, Iowa; Don Manning of Illinois; Frank Manning of Washington, Iowa; one sister, Martha Calhoun of Washington, Iowa as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Katherine Cook and one nephew, Mike Manning.
