Kathryn Darlene Murphy, age 82, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Shelbyville, Indiana, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015 at her residence.

A memorial visitation will be held Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Interment will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery in Indiana at a later date. A memorial has been established for Hospice of Washington County. Kathy was born May 25, 1933 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Mildred (Fuhr) Garrett. She graduated from Washington High School. Kathy was a typist for the United States Air Force and was the first woman to receive the Airman of the Month award as A/2C for Headquarters Squadron Section, 31st Air Division in 1954. During her service she met Jack Murphy and they were united in marriage on June 12, 1954 at the Air Force Chapel in St. Paul, Minnesota. The couple settled down in Shelbyville, Indiana.

During her residency in Indiana, Kathy worked for Belles Fashion Shop and was a professional singer. After returning to Washington in 1980, she worked as a manager at The Captains Table and The Cove and held a job at the United Presbyterian Home for many years. Kathy took pride in her grandchildren and loved to cook for everyone.

She is survived by her son, Mike Murphy of Shelbyville, IN; son, Brian Murphy of Los Angeles, CA; son, Craig Murphy and wife Lisa of Washington, IA; grandchildren: Christopher and Cody Murphy, Tiffany Murphy, Amanda Louden and husband Jon, and Courtney, MacKenzie and Rylie Murphy; and great-grandchildren: Amaya, Zoe, Kaleah, Tatum and Avery.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
