Obituary

Joy J. Batterson, age 85, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at her residence in Washington following a short illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2014, at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Joy was born November 18, 1928, in Quasqueton, Iowa, the daughter of Edmund and Delpha (Heiserman) Fairchild. She attended school in Independence, Iowa and graduated from Independence High School. Joy received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and later received her Degree from the University of Iowa. She was united in marriage to H. Dean Batterson on August 12, 1956, in Washington, Iowa.

Joy lived all of her adult life in Washington, Iowa. She was employed by the Washington Community School District for forty years. Joy started her career teaching fourth grade at Lincoln Elementary and was later the Librarian at the Washington Jr. High School until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Chapter DL, T.T.T., Chapter MX, P.E.O., and AAUW (American Association of University Women). She enjoyed playing Bridge and visiting with family and friends.

Joy is survived by her husband, Dean Batterson of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Dee Hunerdosse of Grimes, Iowa; two grandsons, Mitchell and Jackson Hunerdosse of Grimes, Iowa; brother, Wallace "Wally" Fairchild and wife Joan of Oelwein, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Fern Fairchild of St. John, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Keith Fairchild, and one sister, Jean Franklin.
