John Daryl Hamil Jr., age 92 of Washington, Iowa formerly of Crawfordsville, Iowa died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the M.L. McCreedy home following a decline in health.
Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 26 at the United Church of Crawfordsville with services conducted by Larry Fletcher. General calling hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Crawfordsville. Interment will take place at the Crawfordsville Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the M.L. McCreedy Home or the United Church of Crawfordsville. John was born November 26, 1918 on the family farm near Crawfordsville, Iowa the son of John D. and Ada (Oats) Hamil. He attended Crawfordsville High School and Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. On January 9, 1941, he married Betty Sinclair of Wayland, Iowa in Queens City, Missouri. This was a double ceremony as Towyn and Pauline Davies, lifelong friends of the Hamils, were united in marriage at the same time.
John farmed the family farm for several years before moving to Crawfordsville in 1972. He worked as a crop adjustor for Farmer Mutual Hail Insurance of Iowa retiring in 2006. John was invited by the Insurance Company to Des Moines, Iowa to throw out the first pitch at an Iowa Cubs baseball game. He was a member of the United Church of Crawfordsville and was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over fifty years.
In his early years, John enjoyed taking tickets at the Iowa State Fair. He was an avid fan of Iowa Sports as well as the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. Throughout the years, he and Betty took several bus trips to follow their favorite teams.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Betty Hamil of Washington, Iowa; son John Hamil and wife Pat of Washington, Iowa; daughter Shari Frantz and husband Dave of South Dakota; seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Floyd; and three sisters, Hazel Cherryholmes, Grace Lease and Pearl Dusenbery.
